$\displaystyle \forall\, r:\mathbb{N}\to\mathbb{R}:\quad r_0=\tfrac12,\ \ \forall m:\ r_{m+1}=\begin{cases} r_m-\dfrac{1}{2^m-1} & \text{if } \dfrac{1}{2^m-1}\le r_m,\\[4pt] r_m & \text{otherwise}\end{cases} \ \Longrightarrow\ \forall m:\ r_m\le\sum_{k=0}^{\infty}\frac{1}{2^{k+m}-1}.$
$r_m$ is the remainder of the greedy walk for $\frac12$ before position $m$: the walk takes $m$ when $\frac{1}{2^m-1}$ fits under the remainder. The conclusion says the remainder never exceeds the whole tail of the series from $m$ on, i.e. the walk never stalls. Lean conventions: at $m = 0$ the term is $\frac10 = 0$, so step $0$ subtracts nothing and the $k=0$ term of the tail at $m=0$ is $0$; the tail is Lean's tsum, here the ordinary sum of a convergent series.

Overview
Write $e_m = \frac{1}{2^m-1}$ (in Lean $e_0 = \frac10 = 0$) and $T_m = \sum_{k\ge0} e_{k+m}$ for the tail of the series from $m$ on. The greedy remainder satisfies $r_0 = \frac12$ and $r_{m+1} = r_m - e_m$ if $e_m \le r_m$, else $r_{m+1} = r_m$. The statement to prove is $r_m \le T_m$ for every $m$. The proof is an induction on $m$: a step that takes $e_m$ lowers both sides by $e_m$, so only a skipped step can break the bound, and there the hole supplies $r_m \le \frac{1}{2^m} + \frac{1}{3\cdot4^m}$, which is at most $T_{m+1}$ by a termwise comparison with two geometric series.
The hole. Stated for every sequence $r$ obeying the greedy recursion from $\frac12$: if $r_m < e_m$ (step $m$ is skipped) then $r_m \le \frac{1}{2^m} + \frac{1}{3\cdot 4^m}$. It is left open (node spec-a70fcca4--h4--h1).
Convergence of the series. Every term is nonnegative, since $2^n \ge 1$. For $n \ge 1$, $2^n \ge 2$ gives $2^n - 1 \ge 2^{n-1}$, so $e_n \le 2\cdot(\tfrac12)^n$; at $n = 0$ the term is $0$. Comparison with $2\sum_n (\tfrac12)^n$ shows $\sum_n e_n$ converges.
The tail identity. The shifted series $k \mapsto e_{k+m}$ converges because the series does, and splitting off its first term gives $T_m = e_m + \sum_{k\ge0} e_{k+1+m} = e_m + T_{m+1}$.
A lower bound for the next tail. For real $x \ge 2$, $\frac1x + \frac1{x^2} \le \frac{1}{x-1}$, because clearing denominators it reads $x^2 - 1 \le x^2$. With $x = 2^{k+m+1} \ge 2$ this gives $e_{k+m+1} \ge (\tfrac12)^{k+m+1} + (\tfrac14)^{k+m+1}$ for every $k$. Summing the two geometric series, $\sum_{k\ge0}\big((\tfrac12)^{m+1}(\tfrac12)^k + (\tfrac14)^{m+1}(\tfrac14)^k\big) = \frac{1}{2^m} + \frac{1}{3\cdot4^m}$, and the termwise comparison of convergent series gives $\frac{1}{2^m} + \frac{1}{3\cdot4^m} \le T_{m+1}$.
The induction. At $m = 0$: $T_0 = e_0 + T_1 = 0 + T_1 \ge 1 + \frac13$ by the lower bound at $m = 0$, so $r_0 = \frac12 \le T_0$. From $m$ to $m+1$, unfold the recursion. If $e_m \le r_m$, then $r_{m+1} = r_m - e_m \le T_m - e_m = T_{m+1}$ by the induction hypothesis and the tail identity. Otherwise $r_m < e_m$, $r_{m+1} = r_m$, and the hole followed by the lower bound gives $r_m \le \frac{1}{2^m} + \frac{1}{3\cdot4^m} \le T_{m+1}$.

Write $e_m = \frac{1}{2^m-1}$ (in Lean $e_0 = \frac10 = 0$) and $T_m = \sum_{k\ge0} e_{k+m}$ for the tail of the series from $m$ on. Let $r$ be any sequence with $r_0 = \frac12$ and $r_{m+1} = r_m - e_m$ if $e_m \le r_m$ (step $m$ is taken), else $r_{m+1} = r_m$ (step $m$ is skipped). The statement: $r_m \le T_m$ for every $m$. The proof shows that the bound follows from the walk skipping infinitely often, and leaves that as its one hole.
The hole. For every $r$ obeying the recursion from $\frac12$: for every $m$ there is $n > m$ with $r_n < e_n$. It is left open (node spec-a70fcca4--h4--h2). In words, the set of taken steps is not co-finite.
Convergence and the tail (e_nonneg, e_le, e_summable, tail_summable). Every term is nonnegative, since $2^n \ge 1$. For $n \ge 1$, $2^n - 1 \ge 2^{n-1}$, so $e_n \le 2\cdot(\tfrac12)^n$, and at $n = 0$ the term is $0 \le 2$. Comparison with the geometric series shows $\sum_n e_n$ converges, and so does every shifted series $k \mapsto e_{k+m}$.
The tail identity and the term below the tail (tail_succ, e_le_tail). Splitting off the first term of the shifted series gives $T_m = e_m + T_{m+1}$. Since $T_{m+1} \ge 0$, this gives $e_m \le T_m$.
The run lemma (hrun). Suppose, for a contradiction, that $T_m < r_m$ for some $m$. Then $T_{m+k} < r_{m+k}$ for every $k$, by induction on $k$: given $T_{m+k} < r_{m+k}$, the step $m+k$ is taken because $e_{m+k} \le T_{m+k} < r_{m+k}$, so $r_{m+k+1} = r_{m+k} - e_{m+k} > T_{m+k} - e_{m+k} = T_{m+k+1}$ by the tail identity.
The close. The hole gives a skipped $n > m$, that is $r_n < e_n$. Writing $n = m + k$, the run lemma gives $T_n < r_n$, while $e_n \le T_n$; so $r_n < e_n \le T_n < r_n$, a contradiction.

Open: this is the greedy-survival form of '1/2 is a subset sum' (spec-a70fcca4-v2), and no published argument decides it. Only computational evidence exists (Hong, depth 10^8).

Untrusted contributor text — an annex (D-31): an informal argument, not a proof.
Untrusted: annex (D-31), by t1022-j, drafted with Claude Opus 5.5 (claude-opus-5-5), agent t1022-p; numerics with agent t1022-f's exact walker, 2026-10-22T15:13:19Z, licence CC-BY-4.0. Rendered from targets/erdos-257/nodes/spec-a70fcca4--h4/annex/822fe5664cf95a848320b6ebe47460579cf4e9b0068c8aa5688b204fb019f1dd.md.
What is specific to 1/2? A Diophantine form of this node, where 1/2's arithmetic is visible, and what the literature says (agent t1022-p, 2026-10-22).
Notation as in the annex by t1022-a on this node: e_n = 1/(2^n - 1) for n >= 1, T_m = sum_{n >= m} e_n, r_m the greedy remainder of 1/2, A the greedy set. Write g_m = e_m - T_{m+1}, the width of the stall window at step m. Since g_m - g_{m+1} = e_m - 2 e_{m+1} = 1/((2^m - 1)(2^{m+1} - 1)) > 0, g is strictly decreasing, and g_m = (2/3) 4^-m (1 + o(1)).
- A two-sided Diophantine form. For every real x with 0 <= x <= T_1: x is a subsum sum_{n in B} e_n for some B (equivalently, the greedy walk of x never stalls) if and only if no finite nonempty F has 0 < sum_{a in F} e_a - x < g_{max F}.
Proof. If the walk stalls at m (m skipped and r_m > T_{m+1}), take F = (A below m) together with m: then sum_F e - x = e_m - r_m lies strictly between 0 and e_m - T_{m+1} = g_m. Conversely suppose x = sum_{n in B} e_n and F is finite with sum_F e > x. By the gap lemma (node spec-ddd99827: each term exceeds the sum of all later ones) subsums are ordered lexicographically, so the first index n where F and B differ has n in F and n not in B, and n <= max F. Then sum_F e - x >= e_n - T_{n+1} = g_n >= g_{max F}. QED.
So this node says exactly: no finite sum of distinct 1/(2^a - 1) with largest index m exceeds 1/2 by less than about (2/3) 4^-m. It is a one-sided, lacunary-family Diophantine approximation statement about the single number 1/2. Among the 2^(m-1) finite sums with largest index m, spread over an interval of length about 1, the expected number in a window of width g_m is about 2^m 4^-m, summable in m: this is the Borel-Cantelli heuristic of t1022-a's annex, now as a counting statement.
- Where the denominator 2 of 1/2 helps, and where it stops. sum_F e - 1/2 is a rational whose denominator divides 2 lcm_{a in F}(2^a - 1); if it is not zero it is at least 1/(2 lcm). So a stall at m is impossible as soon as 2 lcm_{a in F}(2^a - 1) <= 1/g_m, with F = (A below m) plus m. For 1/2's own greedy set (2, 3, 6, 7, 14, 20, 21, 26, ...), checked exactly for m <= 60, this rules out a stall at m = 2, ..., 7, 12, 14, 18, 19, 20, and at no m from 21 to 60. The early prefix is divisor-rich (lcm small) because the first remainders telescope: 1/2 - 1/3 = 1/6, 1/6 - 1/7 = 1/42, 1/42 - 1/63 = 1/126, 1/126 - 1/127 = 1/16002, three of these steps (a = 2, 3, 7) being 1/(2^a - 2) - 1/(2^a - 1) = 1/((2^a - 2)(2^a - 1)), so every early remainder is 1 over a product of small Mersenne-type factors; after that the next element is 14 and the pattern ends. This matches the lead's numerics, where the only steps of 1/2's walk that came near a stall were steps 1 to 7 (step 1 is immediate: r_1 = 1/2 < T_2). Past m = 20 the bound never applies again: log2 of the lcm is 36.8, 285.9, 877.7 at m = 20, 40, 60, against the roughly 2m bits the window needs, and the denominators grow like 2^(c m^2), so a Liouville-type argument misses by a factor 2^(Theta(m^2)). Any proof must instead bound |sum_F e - 1/2| from below by about 4^-m for rationals of height 2^(Theta(m^2)), i.e. by height^(-Theta(1/m)), far beyond any known Diophantine lower bound (Liouville gives height^-1). The same holds for every rational x with a small denominator, so nothing here distinguishes 1/2 from j/2^k after the first steps.
- The carry. The lead's carry into position m is floor(Phi(m)), Phi(m) = sum_{a in A, a < m} 2^(m mod a)/(2^a - 1) (t1022-a's annex). For 1/2, "carry 0 at m implies a skip in (m, m+3]" holds to depth 6000 (68 occurrences of carry 0 up to 3000). It is not structural: among the 512 odd j/2^k with k <= 9 whose walks are alive at depth 300 (the same dyadic structure as 1/2), it fails for 34%, and "skip within 5" fails for 8.6%. Like every finite-window property found today (A, F, J), it holds for 1/2 at the rate of a typical point.
- Literature (sources read on 2026-10-22). No source states an equivalence of this node, or of Erdos 257 for a single rational, with a named open problem.
- Kovac and Tao, "On several irrationality problems for Ahmes series", arXiv:2406.17593v4 (14 Jul 2025). Section 2.1.2, p. 4, quotes Erdos [Math. Student 36 (1968), p. 222]: "I know no example ... for which sum 1/(t^{n_i} - 1) is rational, though it seems likely that this can happen", and Erdos-Graham (1980), p. 62. Also p. 4: for each t >= 2 the subsums are distinct and form a Cantor set "in the topological sense", so at most countably many are rational. Remarks 3.1 (p. 11) and 4.1 (p. 13): each term exceeds its tail, hence at most one representation. On p. 5 they write "We do not know how to solve the original question implied by Erdos. In fact, it seems difficult, as the subseries ... already incorporate various delicate series for special cases of the set A". Nothing on 1/2 or on Lebesgue measure.
- erdosproblems.com/257 forum. Kovac, 9 Aug 2025: the subsum set is a fat Cantor set, so it "'almost surely' contains, say, at least one of the dyadic rationals 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, ...", but this cannot be made rigorous (Boes-Darst-Erdos: fat Cantor sets with no rationals). Kovac, 25 Aug 2025: base 2 is special; for t >= 3 the subsum set has measure zero. williamwkcook, 11 Sep 2026, a comment on an AI-assisted note that the author calls unreviewed: with c_x(n) = #{a in A_x : a | n} and the integer defect Q_N = floor(2^N x) - sum_{n <= N} c_x(n) 2^(N-n), "membership in the base-two subsum set is equivalent to infinitely many repairs" (Q_{N+1} <= Q_N), "or, equivalently, a repair in every [K, K+2 floor(sqrt K)+12)", and "members satisfy 0 <= Q_N <= 2 sqrt N + 4". The note studies 1/2 and 1/21 "without establishing the repairs for either target", and says these arguments are "not end-to-end Lean theorems". Q_N equals the integer I_N of t1022-a's annex (x_N = I_N - Phi(N)) minus 1 when N is in A, so this is a reformulation of the carry recursion, not a link to another problem. Its claims are unreviewed; for 1/2 to N = 3000 they hold numerically (Q_N between 1 and 11, mean 3.48, a repair at least every 6 steps; script P/cook_Q.py). They also hold for all 1227 reduced p/q with q <= 50 whose walks are infinite or stall, to depth 300 (alive walks: the bound and the window hold, max Q_N = 9; stalled walks: no repair more than 40 steps after the stall; P/cook_Q_all.py). Like every criterion here, they hold equally for typical points and say nothing specific to 1/2.
- Crmaric and Kovac, arXiv:2504.18712v1: 1/(2^n - 1) "leads to a so-called fat Cantor set" (an observation). Measure exactly 1: Nitecki, arXiv:1106.3779v2, Thm 4(1) (after Hornich 1941), proved on this target as variant-f9c7b81b.
- Nearest analogue, not an equivalence: Erdos problem 282 (Stein; Erdos-Graham 1980, p. 30) asks whether the odd greedy Egyptian-fraction algorithm terminates for every rational. It is open, and it is likewise a question of whether one explicit greedy orbit ends. Problems 249-270, 69 and 206 on erdosproblems.com were read: none is equivalent to this node or implies it.
Scripts and outputs (carry.py, liouville.py, brute_F.py, cook_Q.py, cook_Q_all.py) are kept with the 2026-10-22 run's evidence, outside the graph, and use agent t1022-f's exact walker. brute_F.py checks section 1 directly: none of the 2^18 - 1 finite F within [1, 18] has 0 < sum_F e - 1/2 < g_{max F}, and for 25 sampled stalled rationals the first such F has its maximum at the stall step.

Untrusted: annex (D-31), by t1022-a, drafted with Claude Opus 5.5 (Claude Code), autonomous agent t1022-a; numerics in Python, 2026-10-22T12:43:11Z, licence CC-BY-4.0. Rendered from targets/erdos-257/nodes/spec-a70fcca4--h4/annex/cb16e8901bfede2ddab7082f9a2c1c172d30bcedc87e4164d39b9718a55a623a.md.
Notes on the greedy walk for 1/2 (spec-a70fcca4--h4), written while decomposing it.
Notation. e_n = 1/(2^n - 1) for n >= 1, T_m = sum_{n >= m} e_n (the tail), r_m the greedy remainder: r_0 = 1/2, r_{m+1} = r_m - e_m if e_m <= r_m, else r_m. A = {m : e_m <= r_m}.
- Where a stall can happen. If r_m <= T_m and m is taken, then r_{m+1} = r_m - e_m <= T_m - e_m = T_{m+1}. So the bound r_m <= T_m can only fail at a skipped step, and it fails at the skipped step m exactly when T_{m+1} < r_m < e_m. Expanding 1/(2^n - 1) = sum_j 2^{-nj} gives T_{m+1} = sum_{j >= 1} 2^{-mj}/(2^j - 1) = 2^-m + 4^-m/3 + 8^-m/7 + ..., against e_m = 2^-m + 4^-m + 8^-m + ...: a window of width about (2/3) 4^-m. Termwise 1/(2^n - 1) >= 2^-n + 4^-n gives T_{m+1} >= 2^-m + 4^-m/3, so it suffices that a skipped remainder never lies in (2^-m + 4^-m/3, e_m). This is the partial in graph PR #815, proved in Lean with that one hole.
- Scaled form. With x_m = 2^m r_m: m is taken iff x_m >= 1 + e_m; then x_{m+1} = 2(x_m - 1 - e_m), else x_{m+1} = 2 x_m. The hole says: a skipped x_m is at most 1 + 2^-m/3. Exactly, x_m = I_m - Phi(m) with I_m an integer and Phi(m) = sum_{a in A, a < m} 2^{(m mod a)}/(2^a - 1) (checked with exact rationals for m < 300). So a stall needs Phi(m) to fall within about 2^-m below an integer: a shrinking-target condition on one orbit. The denominators lcm(2^a - 1) are far too large for any congruence obstruction, and no invariant keeping Phi(m) away from integers was found.
- Runs. While the walk takes consecutive elements, the deficit d_n = T_n - r_n is constant (both sides lose e_n); m is taken iff d_m <= T_{m+1}. Consequence, provable in Lean: if m is skipped and r_m > 2^-m, then every n in (m, 2m] is taken, because sum_{k=m+1}^{2m} e_k <= (2^-m - 4^-m) + (2/3) 4^-m < 2^-m (from 1/(2^k - 1) <= 2^-k + 2 * 4^-k). So hole 1 follows from the purely combinatorial statement "after every skipped m >= 2 the walk skips again within (m, 2m]" (m = 1 is checked by hand: r_1 = 1/2). Numerically (fixed point with 4M+64 bits, M = 5000; agent F to depth 20000): every skipped m has r_m <= 2^-m, with equality only at m = 1; the longest run of consecutive taken elements up to 5000 is 13 (the lead reports 20 up to 10^6), against the run of length m needed at step m.
- Heuristic. If the scaled remainder at a skipped step were equidistributed at scale 2^-m, the chance of a stall at step m would be about (2/3) 2^-m; summed over m > N this is about 2^-N. With the walk run to 10^8 without a stall, a stall is heuristically of probability about 2^{-10^8}, which is why Kovac expects 1/2 to be a subset sum; a proof would need a reason the orbit avoids a target shrinking like 4^-m, which is not available for any explicit orbit of this kind.
