Irrationality of the tail sum T

erdos-1050--h1-v2--h1

open

Hole hT of erdos-1050--h1-v2 (split by 20260921T064200Z-tester-1050-2045-partial.lean).

$\displaystyle T=\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}\frac{1}{2^{n+3}-3}=\frac15+\frac1{13}+\frac1{29}+\frac1{61}+\cdots\ \notin\ \mathbb{Q}$

The real number $T$ is irrational (Mathlib's Irrational): it is not equal to any rational number. The sum is Lean's unconditional ∑' over all natural numbers $n\ge 0$, computed in $\mathbb{R}$, which Lean gives the value $0$ when the family is not summable; the statement has no hypotheses and does not assert summability separately.

    The real number $$T=\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}\frac{1}{2^{n+3}-3}=\frac15+\frac1{13}+\frac1{29}+\frac1{61}+\cdots$$ is irrational: it is not equal to any rational number.

    The statement has no hypotheses. The sum is Lean's unconditional sum ∑' over all natural numbers $n \ge 0$, computed in the real numbers. Lean gives such a sum the value $0$ when the series is not summable; the statement does not assert summability separately.

    The file's comment records that this statement is the hole hT of a merged partial proof, written into its own node by the gate.

This file proves the proposition True (by trivial), as a theorem named witness, after importing Mathlib and the node's Context. It exhibits nothing about the node's statement.

Its comment explains why that is all it needs to do: the witness file of a node shows that the statement's hypotheses can be met (the non-vacuity check, step 7 of the gate), and this statement, the irrationality of $\sum_{n\ge0}1/(2^{n+3}-3)$, has no hypotheses (no binders before its colon), so the type asked for is True.

Observation, with a machine-checked lemma (fast check through POST /check only, not the gate): the sum in this hole is exactly the sum in the root.

Write S = sum over n >= 0 of 1/(2^(n+1) - 3) (the root, erdos-1050) and T = sum over n >= 0 of 1/(2^(n+3) - 3) (this hole). The first two terms of S are 1/(2 - 3) = -1 and 1/(4 - 3) = 1, which cancel, and the rest of S is T term by term. So S = T, and Irrational T is the root statement verbatim up to that identity.

Consequence for the graph: the chain erdos-1050 (root) -> erdos-1050--h1-v2 (integer approximations to T tending to 0, never 0) -> erdos-1050--h1-v2--h1 (Irrational T) is circular. Each step is a correct reduction, but together they reduce the root to itself. Proving this hole IS proving Erdos 1050, i.e. Borwein's theorem (P. Borwein, "On the irrationality of certain series", Math. Proc. Cambridge Philos. Soc. 112 (1992); the q = 2, r = -3 case). No decomposition merged so far has made progress on the mathematics; the remaining work is a formalization of Borwein's Pade-approximation argument (or an Erdos-style argument on the binary expansion of T = sum over m of c_m / 2^m, c_m = sum over divisors k of m with m/k >= 3 of 3^(k-1)).

The lemma, which also gives a one-line closing of the root once this hole is proved (rw [S_eq_T]; exact <this hole>), wherever both are in scope:
